Workplace Safety - What does OSHA say about CPR First Aid and AEDs?
OSHA's standard for first aid training in general industry, 29 CFR 1910.151(b), provides:
In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of all injured employees, a person or persons shall be adequately trained to render first aid. Adequate first aid supplies shall be readily available.

In the construction industry, 29 CFR 1926.50(c) provides: In the absence of an infirmary clinic, hospital, or physician, that is reasonably accessible in terms of time and distance to the worksite, which is available for the treatment of injured employees, a person who has a valid certificate in first-aid training from the U.S. Bureau of Mines, the American Red Cross, or equivalent training that can be verified by documentary evidence, shall be available at the worksite to render first aid.

The primary requirement addressed by these standards is that an employer must ensure prompt first aid treatment for injured employees, either by providing for the availability of a trained first aid provider at the worksite, or by ensuring that emergency treatment services are within reasonable proximity of the worksite. The basic purpose of these standards is to assure that adequate first aid is available in the critical minutes between the occurrence of an injury and the availability of physician or hospital care for the injured employee.

Please note - OSHA standards do not indicate the exact number of minutes, OSHA has long interpreted the term "near proximity" to mean that emergency care must be available within no more than 3-4 minutes from the workplace. Think about this time limit for a moment. It takes the average person 3-4 minutes to walk to their car and pull out of their driveway each morning. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to get someone to the hospital this fast.

The first aid training standards at 29 CFR 1910.151 and 1926.50(c) generally apply throughout the industries that they cover. Other standards which apply to certain specific hazards or industries make employee first aid training mandatory, and reliance on outside emergency responders is not an allowable alternative. For example, see 29 CFR 1910. 266(i)(7) (mandatory first aid training for logging employees), and 29 CFR 1910.269(b) (requiring persons trained in first aid at work locations in the electric power industry).

Why is the domain name Set of Irons?
"Set of Irons" are the traditional tools of the Fire Service.  The most basic of hand tools in the fire service and the most well known.  This set of tools called a "set of irons" or a "married" couple becuase of their set-up and conisits of  a flat head axe and halligan bar used for forcible entry, turning off a gas meter or performing ventillation on a burning structure.  This set of tools has many uses and is usually always carried by a firefighting team while on an emergency scene.

These same firefighters often use another tool to save lives.  They use an Automated External Defibrillator or AED.  But you don't need to be a firefighter, EMT or paramedic to use an AED.  Anyone could use one and everyone should know how to use an AED.
